Sri Vishnu Shata nama Stotram




6. हरिः - ஹரி: - hariḥ :-


The name Hari means,
a) The Green-hued.
b) He Who removes the distress of His devotees.
c) He Who wards off samsAra with its cause from His devotees.
d) The Destroyer of the Universe at the time of pralaya.

a) The term hara refers to green color. 

BhagavAn's words from mahA bhArata are given in support by SrI BhaTTar.

इडोपहूतं गेहेषु हरे पाकं ऋतुष्वहं वर्णश्च मे हरिः श्रेष्ठः तस्मात् हरिः इति स्मृतः॥
iDopahUtaM geheShu hare pAkaM RRituShvahaM varNashcha me hariH shreShThaH tasmAt hariH iti smRRitaH|| 
- Shanti Parvam, Mahabharatam.

"My superior complexion is green, and therefore I am called Hari".

One is reminded of the familiar pASuram "paccai mA-malai pOl mEni…) (tirumAlai 2)
.

b) SrI aNNa'ngarAcArya gives the interpretation "ArtigaLai harippavar" - He who removes the distress of His devotees.


c) He Who wards off samsAra with its cause from His devotees. Srimad Sankararacharyar in his bhashyam on Vishnu Sahasranamam says,


सहेतुकं संसारं हरतीति हरिः ।
sahetukaṃ saṃsāraṃ haratīti hariḥ ।
" He who wards off samsAra with its cause from His devotees is harih. "

Alternatively,
पापानां हरतीति हरिः ।
pāpānāṃ haratīti hariḥ ।
" He who wards off the sins of His devotees. "

d) SrI satyadevo vAsishTha extends the anubhavam to include bhagavAn's destruction of the world at the time of pralaya, and His destruction of the darkness in our minds always.

Apart from these,
गिरो गोवर्धनाख्ये तु देवः सर्वेश्वरो हरिः संस्थितः पूजितः स्थाने ।giro govardhanākhye tu devaḥ sarveśvaro hariḥ saṃsthitaḥ pūjitaḥ sthāne ।

" The sarveshwara who seated himself as a Archa moorthy in the Govardhana Giri. He is devoted by his devotees in the name of Hari. "

शत्रून् हरति, यज्ञभागमाहरति, संसारं परिहरति, वर्णितश्च हरित इति हरिः।
śatrūn harati, yajñabhāgamāharati, saṃsāraṃ pariharati, varṇitaśca harita iti hariḥ।

Destroys the enemies, takes and gives the Yajna bhagam, gives salvation from samsaram and he who is green in complexion is Hari.

केशि वधेन देवादीनां गोपानाञ्च मनोहरणाद्धरिः ।
keśi vadhena devādīnāṃ gopānāñca manoharaṇāddhariḥ ।

He who delights the minds of deva and gopa by killing the demon Keshi.

Some famous sloka related to Hari namam :




शरीरे जर्झरीभूते व्याधिग्रस्ते कलेवरे।
औषधं जाह्नवीतोयं वैद्यो नारायणो हरिः॥

ஶரீரே ஜர்ஜரீபூ4தே வ்யாதி4க்3ரஸ்தே கலேவரே|
ஔஷத4ம் ஜாஹ்னவீதோயம் வைத்3யோ நாராயணோ ஹரி:||

śarīrē jarjharībhūtē vyādhigrastē kalēvarē|
auṣadhaṃ jāhnavītōyaṃ vaidyō nārāyaṇō hariḥ ||



"When the sharIra (body) is suffering and the body is beset with disease, medicine is like the sacred water of the Ganga and the doctor is nArAyaNa Himself".
Another reading would be to consider water of the gangA itself as medicine and nArAyaNa Himself as the doctor. The interesting word here is also "hariH" - hari means some one who destroys. In this case it would mean that nArAyaNa is destroying disease.

वेदे रामायणे शास्त्रे पुराणे भारते तथा।
आदौ मध्ये ततश्चान्ते हरिः सर्वत्र गीयते॥

vede rāmāyaṇe śāstre purāṇe bhārate tathā।
ādau madhye tataścānte hariḥ sarvatra gīyate॥

Let us take the instance of Ramayana, Mahabharata Shastra and Puranas from the beginning to the end the greatness of Sri Hari is described meticulously. In the beginning, in the middle and at the end we find the Mahima of our NARAYANA - VISHNU - SRI HARI SARVATRA GEEYATE.

पतितः स्खलितो भग्नः सन्दष्टस्तप्त आहतः।
हरिरित्यवशेनाह पुमान्नार्हति यातनाः॥
பதித: ஸ்க2லிதோ ப4க்3ன: ஸந்த3ஷ்டஸ்தப்த ஆஹத:|
ஹரிரித்யவஶேனாஹ புமான்னார்ஹதி யாதனா:||
patitaḥ skhalitō bhagnaḥ sandaṣṭastapta āhataḥ|
harirityavaśēnāha pumānnārhati yātanāḥ||
- SB 6.2.15

If one chants the holy name of Hari and then dies because of an accidental misfortune, such as falling from the top of a house, slipping and suffering broken bones while traveling on the road, being bitten by a serpent, being afflicted with pain and high fever, or being injured by a weapon, one is immediately absolved from having to enter hellish life, even though he is sinful.

आलोड्य सर्वशास्त्राणि विचार्य च पुनः पुनः।
इदमेकं सुनिष्पन्नं ध्येयो नारायणो हरिः॥
ālōḍya sarvaśāstrāṇi vicārya ca punaḥ punaḥ|
idamēkaṃ suniṣpannaṃ dhyēyō nārāyaṇō hariḥ||
ஆலோட்3ய ஸர்வஶாஸ்த்ராணி விசார்ய ச புன: புன:|
இத3மேகம் ஸுனிஷ்பன்னம் த்4யேயோ நாராயணோ ஹரி:||

After a deep study of all saasthrAs, and repeated investigations into their purports, we come to this
conclusion that one to be mediated upon is Hari- Sriman Narayanan.

5. जनार्दनः - ஜனார்தன: - janārdanaḥ :





The nama ‘Janardanah’ has three meanings :
a) One who destroys the wicked.
b) One who protects people from the wicked.
c) One who is approached by devotees for their wishes.

Sri Adi Sankaracharya, in his Vishnu sahasranama bhashyam gives the following two interpretations :

First interpretation –

अर्द - हिंसायां > arda - to himsaa , to hurt.

जनान् दुर्जनानर्दयति हिनस्ति , नरकादीन् गमयतीति वा जनार्दनः ,
janān durjanānardayati hinasti , narakādīn gamayatīti vā janārdanaḥ ,

One who destroys the evil people or banishes them to hell.’ He does not need any help to vanquish the demons.

Another interpretation -
अर्द - गतौ याचने च > ardda - gatau yācane ca , to yaachana, to beg., to ask.

जनैः पुरुषार्थमभ्युदय निःश्रेयस लक्षणं याच्यते इति जनार्दनः।
janaiḥ puruṣārthamabhyudaya niḥśreyasa lakṣaṇaṃ yācyate iti janārdanaḥ |

One who is approached by His devotees for whatever they wish to get.

Sri Parasara Bhattar gives the third meaning by quoting from the Mahabharata –

दस्यु त्राणात् जनार्दनः ।
dasyu trāṇāt janārdanaḥ ।
- Mahabharatam, Udyoga Parvam, 71.6.

He is Janardanah because HE protects people from Dasyus (Demons).’

In Vishnu Sahasranamam 'Janardanah' comes as 128th name, in 14th sloka.
Apart from this some says,

पालन विरोधिनो जनानर्द्दयति मारयतीति जनार्द्दनः , अर्द्द हिम्सायाम्
जनैरर्द्दते याच्यते सौख्यमयमिति वा , अर्द्द गतौ याचने च ।

pālana virodhino janānarddayati mārayatīti janārddanaḥ , ardda himsāyām
janairarddate yācyate saukhyamayamiti vā , ardda gatau yācane ca ।

These also explains the same meaning that of Sankararacharya's commentary.

In Vishnu Shodasha nama stotram it is said that,

" भोजने च जनार्दनं, bhojane ca janaardanam " which means Think of Vishnu As Janaardhana, while partaking food.

Truly, the most genuine wish with which a Jeevaatma can approach Janaardhana is the wish of having his hunger satisfied. Without this wish being granted and satisfied, nothing else can be done. So when we are blessed by Him to have an abundant supply of delicious and sumptuous food, it is required that we at least show our gratitude and thank Him for what He has provided for our daily sustenance. Also, we ask of Him to transform this food that is consumed by the gross body into spiritual energy so that we have the strength and the courage to fight the evil within and around us. Here hunger implies not only the physical but the devotional hunger also. Every Jeevatma has the hunger to get /attain the Paramatma. This longing is the only cause for all the other longings of the every living beings.

Varkala, a sea side town, also known as Janardanapuram, is a sacred pilgrim centre situated in Thiruvananthapruam district(Kerala) and is famous for its ancient temple of vishnu , who is popularly called as Janardana. In Sri Maha Bhavatham, mention is made that balarama, the elder brother of Sri Krishna, visited this shrine during this pilgrimage to Kanya kumari temple and also a few other temple in the south. Also, it is as ‘the Gaya of the South'. Varkala has many attractions peculiar to the place and draws hundreds of pilgrims and visitors all the year round.
